Apple’s Tiny Tracker Just Got a Serious Upgrade

Apple has announced a refreshed AirTag with better range, louder sound, Apple Watch support, and airline integration — making it more useful than ever.

Apple just announced a new AirTag, and honestly, it’s about time this little disc got some love.

The original AirTag has been helping people find their lost wallets and keys since 2021, but the new version takes things up a notch in ways that actually matter. We’re talking better range, louder beeping, and smarter tracking. If you’ve ever played the world’s most frustrating game of hide-and-seek with your car keys, this update is for you.

Farther, Louder, Smarter

The biggest change is range. Thanks to Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip (the same one in the iPhone 17), Precision Finding now works from 50% farther away. That means you can start tracking down your stuff before you’re practically standing on top of it.

The Bluetooth chip got an upgrade too, so your AirTag can ping your phone from even greater distances. And when you do get close? The new AirTag is 50% louder than before. You’ll hear it from twice as far away, which is clutch when your keys have burrowed deep into the couch cushions or your wallet has somehow ended up under a pile of jeans.

There’s also a new chime that’s more distinctive, so you’re not confusing your AirTag beep with literally anything else making noise in your house.

Now You Can Track From Your Wrist

For the first time, you can use Precision Finding on your Apple Watch. If you’ve got a Series 9 or later (or an Ultra 2 or later), your wrist will guide you straight to whatever you lost. Haptic feedback, visual cues, the whole deal. It’s weirdly satisfying to watch your watch tell you you’re getting warmer.

Airlines Are On Board

Here’s where things get really useful. AirTag now works seamlessly with Share Item Location, which lets you share your bag’s location directly with airline customer service if it goes missing. Over 50 airlines are already part of the program, and the results speak for themselves. According to SITA, a major airline IT provider, Share Item Location has cut baggage delays by 26% and reduced "truly lost" luggage by a staggering 90%.

The link you share only works for authorized airline staff, expires after seven days, and you can shut it off anytime. It’s a small feature that solves a very big, very stressful travel problem.

Still Private, Still Secure

Apple hasn’t loosened up on privacy. The new AirTag doesn’t store location data on the device itself, everything sent through Find My is end-to-end encrypted, and Apple still can’t see where your stuff is. The anti-stalking features are still there too, including alerts if an unknown AirTag is traveling with you and rotating Bluetooth identifiers to keep things anonymous.

It’s designed for tracking objects, not people or pets. Apple’s been pretty clear about that from the start.

Same Price, Same Look, Greener Materials

The new AirTag costs exactly what the old one did: $29 for one, $99 for a four-pack. You can still get free engraving if you order from Apple’s site. And because Apple kept the same form factor, all your old AirTag accessories still work.

On the sustainability front, the new model uses 85% recycled plastic in the enclosure, 100% recycled rare earth elements in the magnets, and 100% recycled gold plating. The packaging is fully fiber-based and recyclable. It’s not flashy, but it’s progress.

The Bottom Line

The AirTag was already useful. Now it’s just better at being useful. Longer range, louder speaker, Watch support, and airline integration all add up to a tracker that’s genuinely more helpful in real situations.

If you’ve been holding off on getting one, or if your original AirTag has been doing its best but you want the upgrade, this is a solid refresh. It’s not revolutionary, but it doesn’t need to be. Sometimes the best updates are the ones that just make everyday stuff work better.

You can order the new AirTag today from Apple’s website or the Apple Store app. It’ll hit physical stores later this week.
