So Apple just launched the new MacBook Neo with the A18 Pro chip and on paper it sounds pretty exciting.
But here is the thing.
Most people comparing this laptop will likely be looking at the base MacBook Neo with 8GB RAM which starts at ₹69,999/$699 and comparing it with something like a used or discounted M2 Air with 16GB RAM at ₹64,999/$600.
And once you start comparing those two, things get a lot more interesting.
The Performance Numbers
Yes the A18 Pro is a powerful chip. In fact it easily beats the M2 in single core performance.
The A18 Pro scores around 3400 in single core compared to about 2500 on the M2 Air which is roughly a 36% jump. That is genuinely impressive.
But laptops are rarely about single core performance alone.
Multicore and GPU Performance
When you look at multicore performance the M2 Air is actually about 10% better with scores around 9500 compared to roughly 8500 on the A18 Pro.
On the GPU side the difference is even bigger. The M2 Air scores around 42k in the Metal test while the A18 Pro sits closer to 32k, which is roughly a 32% advantage for the M2.
And that is just the chip comparison.
What the MacBook Neo is Missing
Once you start looking at the rest of the laptop, the M2 Air still has quite a few advantages.
Things like
- No Magsafe port on the Neo
- USB3 ports instead of Thunderbolt like on the Air
- Around 2 hours less claimed battery life (16 hours vs 18 hours on M2 Air)
- 60GB/s memory bandwidth compared to 100GB/s on the M2 Air
- sRGB display compared to P3 display on the Air
- Same weight somehow
- Dual speaker setup compared to quad speakers on the Air
- No Touch ID on the cheaper ₹69,999 model
So while the A18 Pro MacBook Neo wins in single core, the overall machine feels like a compromise in quite a few areas.
The RAM Factor
And then comes the biggest factor.
RAM.
The base Neo ships with 8GB RAM, while many M2 Air models available today come with 16GB for similar pricing.
That extra RAM alone can make a huge difference in real world usage especially if you are multitasking, running heavier apps or just planning to keep the laptop for a few years.
The Verdict
Overall the Neo feels interesting but the M2 Air with 16GB RAM still looks like the smarter buy.
Honestly even an M1 Air with 16GB RAM would probably be a better long term machine for many people.
